This position will hold responsibility for ensuring the facility complies with current and future guidelines and managing and developing the facility under the legal framework. This will also include confirming that the processes and authorities are in place to ensure that the research community can access all available resources.

Proven knowledge of The Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act and other relevant legislation relating to the use of laboratory animals is essential. If successful you will be responsible for leading the facility, so that it continues to enable and promote the highest quality (non-human) in vivo research and teaching in accordance with policies and legislation.  

The University’s ambition is to become the leading academic animal facility in the UK and this role will be work other leaders and the BSF Team to do everything to achieve this. The successful individual will possess high level leadership and management skills, proven and substantial experience in a research environment, analytical thinking, strategic planning and implementation skills, and demonstrable knowledge of health and safety regulations. 

Amongst a range of duties, the position provides real leadership and management of the BSF facility and is at the forefront for delivering a high service culture in an environment in which animal welfare is at the forefront of all decisions and actions. As an effective communicator, you will support and develop staff, promote collaboration and partnership and be an engaging link to a range of stakeholders.

Senior level leadership and management is required in order to effectively drive strategy, budgets, performance, continuous improvement, culture and collaboration. This position suits a visibly authentic leader with the ability to lead by example, set direction, motivate staff and impart influence through lateral/upward negotiation.

A background of demonstrable success and results in a senior level animal research capacity is also required. Significant practical experience of best practice in relation to animal welfare, 3Rs and relevant legislations are essential.
