Agenda are currently working in a partnership with a global biotechnology company to develop and manage a new in vivo research facility in Cambridge. We are seeking an experienced facility manager to lead the development of internal processes and support a growing team of researchers and technicians.   

The successful candidate will be required to manage a unit and ensure the highest standards of animal welfare within appropriate legal framework, as well as ensuring that animals and facilities are available to research users as required.

Essential Requirements:

  • Experience in management of laboratory rodent facilities.
  • Experience as a Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) or Named Training and Competency Officer (NTCO).
  • Must hold a Home Office Personal Licence and have experience in regulated procedures and techniques.
  • Must be fully conversant with transgenic technology including knowledge and experience of transgenic breeding, and the maintenance of breeding colonies.
  • Experience with Home Office project licences, personal licence application procedures, and the AWERB process.
  • Proven track record in a senior supervisory role.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Animals Scientific Procedures Act 1986.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with staff at all levels, from both within and outside the organisation.

Desirable requirements:

  • Experience in establishing policies, documentation and working practices within a newly commissioned laboratory animal facility
  • Previous experience in offering project support as part of a leadership team
  • Competent in use of IT applications, processes and software, including MCMS and ASPeL.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement policies, documentation and working practices in a new in-vivo facility.
  • Ensuring best standards of animal welfare and researchers’ requirements are met.
  • Act as the NACWO or NTCO, demonstrating a full and up to date working knowledge of ASPA.
  • Liaise with users to plan and implement breeding programmes and experimental programmes to ensure requirements are met.
  • Provide clear and decisive leadership on all aspects of research conducted in the BSU to all staff from both within and outside the facility, fostering strong customer focus and relationships.
  • Provide day-to-day management of the BSU including supervision of staff and interacting with facility researchers, ensuring legal compliance and best practice.
  • Setting high standards of service and assuming responsibility for ensuring that these are maintained.
  • Responsible for ensuring facilities are managed efficiently and within budgetary constraints.
  • Oversee and manage the operation of the BSU computerised record keeping and procurement systems.
  • Contribute to the overall success of Agenda’s Facility management services through participation as part of the leadership group.
  • The post-holder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager.
