On behalf of our client, we are looking for a capable and enthusiastic Deputy Manager for their Biomedical Services Unit. The facility supports academic and contract studies in biomedical research predominantly with rodents and zebrafish. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in the field of animal technology and ASPA legislation and demonstrate a commitment to the highest standards of animal health and welfare.

They will also hold the role of Named Training and Competency Officer (NTCO) ensuring that all personnel working within the BSU are inducted, trained, competent and authorised to perform licenced in vivo procedures. The successful candidate will be expected to continuously seek and support new approaches and practices to improve efficiency and compliance and assist in overseeing COSHH, Health and Safety, procurement and finance matters.

Basic Requirements:

  • BSc in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience.
  • Home Office Licence modules A-C.
  • Extensive experience in the care of laboratory animals with excellent knowledge of Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
  • Extensive experience in training and competency assessments.
  • Experience in conducting experimental techniques and regulated procedures.
  • NTCO and/or NACWO certificates are desirable.
  • Excellent planning, organising and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of COSHH and Health and Safety legislation.
  • Line management experience is advantageous.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the Animal Facility Manager to coordinate and manage the daily activity of the physical resources and technical staff within the unit to ensure that the requirements and objectives of the researchers using the facility are met.
  • Responsible for the effective daily management of the BSU facility, equipment, and service.
  • Line-management of grade 1-3 technical staff including: recruitment and selection, probation, performance management, training, and mentoring.
  • Conduct and coordinate inductions and appropriate technical training on the use of the facility for staff and researchers, delivered either in house or through external sources.
  • Assist where necessary with the husbandry and care of animals in accordance with ASPA as required.
  • Assist with the implementation of an animal database to be used within the facility, with subsequent maintenance of the software and running reports.
  • Carry out budgeting exercises and cost control measures under the supervision of the BSU Manager.
  • Design, implementation, and maintenance of the department website (in agreement with Facility Manager) to include general overview, licencing details, and forms; induction packs and procedures; AWERB details and forms; general resources.
  • Undertake development activities where necessary in order to keep knowledge and skills up to date and relevant and share this with other users as appropriate.
  • Undertake standard risk and other safety assessments and produce SOP’s where necessary.
  • There will be some lone working at weekends and holidays on a rota basis to ensure all animals are fed and checked and that equipment is functioning as required.
